• Sandhill Cranes at Sunset in Central New Mexico. After a few hours of photographing the birds, the sun began to set and these trees formed a great location with Sandhill Cranes working their way through the grasses. Waited for just the moment with a couple of them flying between the trees to capture this image. , Ladd S. Gordon Waterfowl Management Area (Category: Birds)

    • Wildlife and humans rarely mix humanely. While driving across Idaho, to Yellowstone, I came upon a long stretch of highway with a great many dead barn owls alongside the road. They seemed to be every 25-30 feet, and on both sides of the freeway..Perhaps they were attracted by headlights at dawn or dusk. and struck by cars. This unfortunate owl tangled with barbed wire along the road and was unable to free itself. The lifeless dry weeds echo the writhing of the owl's final struggle in this stark scene. , Idaho (Category: Conservation)

    • I live in a small city in Alaska of about 6000 people where 99% of our electrical needs are generated by renewable sources. Along with a hydro dam at Terror Lake, Kodiak also generates electricity through a series of wind turbines. Lessening Kodiak's dependency on fossil fuel to generate electricity has decreased our carbon footprint significantly. I'm proud to be a member of such a forward thinking community. , Kodiak, AK (Category: Conservation)

    • Antelope Island is home to a healthy, wild population of bighorn sheep. A number of these animals are transported, as part of conservation efforts, to increase sheep numbers around the state. The process begins by flying low over the island, where from the air, biologists choose suitable individuals, shoot them with a net gun and hop out to tie up the captured animals. Once the sheep are restrained, the pilot returns, sheep dangling in bags beneath the helicopter. On the ground, the bighorn are weighed, measured, given blood tests and antibiotics before being loaded into a trailer for transport. , Antelope Island, Great Salt Lake, Utah (Category: Conservation)
